Center building at Saint Elizabeths, August 23, 2006
The main building of St Elizabeths Hospital (2006), located in Washington, D.C., was one of the places where the Rosenhan experiment happened.

The Rosenhan experiment was a famous test in psychiatry. Psychiatry is a field of medicine that helps people with mental health challenges. This experiment wanted to see how well doctors could tell the difference between people who were truly mentally ill and those who were not. It was also called "On being sane in insane places."

The experiment was created by David Rosenhan. He was a professor at Stanford University. He did this study in 1972. The results were published in a science magazine called Science.

What Was the Rosenhan Experiment?

The Rosenhan experiment had two main parts. It was designed to check how good psychiatric hospitals were at making a diagnosis. A diagnosis is when a doctor figures out what illness someone has.

Part 1: Fake Patients Go to Hospitals

In the first part, Rosenhan and seven other healthy people pretended to be sick. These eight people were called "pseudopatients." They went to different psychiatric hospitals in the United States. They told the doctors they heard voices. These voices were not real. Hearing things that are not there is called a hallucination. This was the only symptom they reported.

Once they were admitted to the hospital, they stopped pretending. They acted completely normal. They wrote notes about what happened. They wanted to see if the hospital staff would notice they were healthy.

What Happened to the Pseudopatients?

All eight pseudopatients were admitted to the hospitals. They were diagnosed with serious mental illnesses. Even though they acted normally, the staff did not realize they were faking. The pseudopatients stayed in the hospitals for a long time. The shortest stay was 7 days, and the longest was 52 days. They were only released when they agreed they had a mental illness.

This part of the experiment showed that it was hard for the hospitals to tell who was truly sick. Once someone was labeled with a mental illness, it was hard to change that label.

Part 2: Hospitals Expect Fake Patients

The second part of the experiment was different. Rosenhan told a famous teaching hospital that he would send some fake patients to them. He said they should try to find these fake patients.

The Hospital's Reaction

The hospital staff carefully watched all new patients. They thought they found many fake patients. They even said some patients were definitely faking. But here's the surprising part: Rosenhan did not send any fake patients to the hospital during this time!

This showed that the hospital staff were too quick to see signs of mental illness. They thought they saw fake patients even when there were none.

What Did the Experiment Show?

The Rosenhan experiment caused a lot of discussion. It suggested that it was very hard to tell the difference between people who were truly mentally ill and those who were not. It also showed that once someone was labeled with a mental illness, that label could stick. This could make it hard for them to be seen as healthy again.

The study made people think more about how mental health diagnoses are made. It helped improve the way doctors look at mental health.
