Discovering the Rothschild's Woodlizard
Scientists Omar Torres-Carvajal, Pablo J. Venegas, and Kevin de Queiroz officially described this lizard in 2015. They gave it the scientific name Enyalioides sophiarothschildae. This name helps scientists around the world know exactly which animal they are talking about.
What Makes It Special?
The Rothschild's woodlizard has some unique features that help scientists tell it apart from other lizards in its family.
- Tail Scales: Its tail has scales that are all about the same size on each part of the tail. This is called "homogeneous caudal scales."
- Throat Color: Males of this species have a white throat area, also known as a gular region. This white area has a black patch. It also has beautiful turquoise scales.
- Face Markings: The scales around its mouth (called labials) and its chin are a clean, plain white. They do not have any spots or marks.
These special features help researchers identify and study this amazing lizard in its natural home.
Where Does It Live?
This woodlizard lives in the Amazon rainforest in Peru. Specifically, it can be found on the slopes of the Cordillera Central mountain range. This area is rich in different kinds of plants and animals. The rainforest provides the perfect habitat for this lizard. It gives it places to hide, hunt for food, and raise its young.
