History of Round House Theatre
Round House Theatre started in 1970. Back then, it was called "Street '70". It was a program from Montgomery County that helped teach about theatre in schools. It also put on shows around the county.
In 1977, the company found a permanent home. It moved into the old Bushey Drive Elementary School. This building was in Silver Spring and became known as the Round House Theatre.
By 1982, the company became an official nonprofit group. It was named "Round House". It stayed part of the County's Recreation Department until 1993. After that, it became a separate, independent theatre group. This meant it could make its own decisions about shows and programs.
What Round House Theatre Does
Round House Theatre puts on many different kinds of shows. These include classic plays, brand new plays, and fun musicals. About 55,000 people come to watch their shows every year.
The theatre has been nominated for many Helen Hayes Awards. These awards celebrate great theatre in the Washington D.C. area. Round House has won 39 of these awards! They have also won the 50/50 Applause Award four times. This award celebrates theatres that give equal chances to women playwrights.
Learning at Round House
Round House Theatre also has great programs for students. More than 3,000 students learn there each year. Their Education Center is in Silver Spring. They also work with other schools in Montgomery County.
These programs include theatre classes for kids and adults. They also have summer programs for students from kindergarten to high school. There's even a teen performance group run by high school students.
Round House also has a program called Free Play. This program lets teenagers and college students see theatre shows for free!
How Round House is Supported
Round House is part of important theatre groups. These include the League of Resident Theatres (LORT) and the League of Washington Theatres (LOWT). It is a 501(c)3 nonprofit group. This means it gets support from places like Montgomery County and the Maryland State Arts Council.
