Rous Lench is a special farm and homestead located in Muswellbrook, New South Wales, Australia. It was built a long time ago, between 1875 and 1895. This historic place is officially listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register, which means it's protected because of its important history and unique design.

History of Rous Lench

The land where Rous Lench stands was first given to George Forbes on August 1, 1839. This was a very large area, about 1280 acres (which is like 518 hectares). Even though the official paper (deed of grant) was given in 1839, people had been living and working on this land for many years before that.

The main house, called the homestead, was designed by a famous architect named John Horbury Hunt. It was built in a style called Italianate. This style often includes features like low roofs, wide eaves, and decorative details.

What Rous Lench Looks Like

The Rous Lench homestead is a low, charming cottage. It is made from brick that has been covered with a smooth finish, called "rendered brick." The roof is made of corrugated iron.

Here are some of its special features:

  • The roof has small pointed sections called gables.
  • It has doors with four panels.
  • The windows are large with four panes of glass. These are called sash windows.
  • Inside, the ceilings have decorative panels.
  • Some French windows on the side have special wooden frames called "gunstock stiles."

It is believed that Rous Lench is not the very first house built on this land. An older house might have been taken down or rebuilt when the current homestead was finished around 1895.

Rous Lench is considered very important for many reasons, which is why it's on the State Heritage Register.

The way the homestead is placed in the landscape is also a very important part of its significance.

Rous Lench was officially listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999.
