Rowan and the Travellers is an exciting fantasy novel for young readers. It is the second book in the popular Rowan of Rin series. Written by Emily Rodda, this book was first published in 1994. It continues the adventures of Rowan, a brave but shy boy from the village of Rin.
The story begins right after the first book ends. It tells about a mysterious group of people called the Travellers. They arrive in Rin and then leave just as suddenly. The Story of the Travellers

The Sleeping Sickness
After the Travellers leave, a strange sleeping sickness starts to affect the people of Rin. Many villagers suspect that the Travellers caused this illness. Rowan, along with Allun the baker, decides to find the Travellers. They hope to ask them for help to stop the sickness.
Journey to the Pit of Unrin
Rowan and Allun follow the Travellers, who are heading towards a scary place called the Pit of Unrin. During their journey, they discover the real cause of the sickness. It comes from dangerous Mountain-berries. These berries grow on the Mountain next to Rin. Their strong scent makes people fall into a deep, heavy sleep.
Saving Rin Village
It turns out that these Mountain-berries are the young form of much larger trees. These trees grow deep beneath the Mountain itself. To save Rin, Rowan, Allun, and the Travellers must work together. They use a special potion made by Sheba, created from slip-daisy roots. This potion is their only hope to cure the sleeping sickness.

Rowan of the Bukshah
Rowan is the main hero of the story. He lives in the village of Rin. Even though he is shy and not very strong physically, Rowan is incredibly brave when he needs to be. He is also very smart and good at solving puzzles. Rowan has a kind heart but can get scared easily. He often notices that Strong Jonn is very fond of his mother, Jiller.
Strong Jonn
Strong Jonn is one of the most powerful people in Rin. He is also very kind and honest. However, he can get very angry if something upsets him. Strong Jonn is a brave person. He is in love with Jiller, Rowan's mother. Rowan often sees how much Strong Jonn cares for her. After Rowan's father passes away, Strong Jonn joins Rowan on his journey up the Mountain.
Allun the Baker
Allun is the baker in the village of Rin. He accidentally brought the dangerous Mountain-berries down from the Mountain. The strong smell from these plants causes people to fall into a deep, sleep-like state. Allun plays a big part in the mystery of the sleeping sickness.
Jiller
Jiller is Rowan's mother. She is a very kind and caring person. She is also in love with Strong Jonn, who loves her very much in return.
