Rowing Events at the Olympics
Rowing at the Olympics involves different types of boats and teams. Some boats have a "coxswain" who steers and tells the rowers what to do. Others are "coxswainless," meaning the rowers steer themselves. There are also different numbers of rowers in each boat, like pairs (two rowers), fours (four rowers), or eights (eight rowers). "Sculls" means each rower uses two oars, while "oars" means each rower uses one oar.
Men's Rowing Events
Men competed in eight different rowing events. East Germany won most of the gold medals in these races. For example, they won the gold in the Four-oars with coxswain event. They also took gold in the Double sculls and the Coxswainless pair-oars races.
The Single sculls event, where one person rows alone, was won by Pertti Karppinen from Finland. East Germany continued their winning streak in the Pair-oars with coxswain and Coxswainless four-oars events. They also won gold in the Coxswainless quadruple sculls and the big Eight-oars with coxswain race.
