Roxbury Center is a special village in Roxbury, Connecticut. It's the main part of town where people have gathered for a long time. This historic area is located where two roads, Route 67 and Route 317, meet. It has been important for town life since the mid-1700s. In 1983, this village was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as a place with important history.
Exploring Roxbury Center's Past
Roxbury is a quiet, hilly community in northwestern Connecticut. It sits just east of New Milford. Long ago, Roxbury was part of another town called Woodbury. It became its own separate town in 1796.
A Look at Roxbury's Beginnings
In the 1730s, Roxbury started as a separate church area within Woodbury. The first church was built in a small settlement. This was a bit southeast of where the town center is today. The oldest building in the current center dates back to 1740. It was first a tavern, a place where travelers could eat and stay. Later, it was changed to look like buildings from the Greek Revival style.
The village became the most important part of Roxbury in the 1790s. Many of its buildings were built around that time. They also include styles from the next 50 to 60 years. One of Roxbury's most famous people was Seth Warner. He was a hero in the American Revolutionary War. He is buried under a tall stone monument on the town green.
Historic Buildings and Architecture
The historic district of Roxbury Center is mainly set around a triangular intersection. This is where Weller's Bridge Road, North Street, and Church Street meet. South Street also extends south from this area. The district covers more than 200 acres (about 81 hectares). This includes open land that was used for farming. This open space helped the village stand out from its surroundings.
Most of the buildings in the district are on Weller's Bridge Road or Church Street. Many of these are homes. They are built in styles like Federal or Greek Revival. You can also see examples of later styles. These include Victorian or Colonial Revival buildings.
Important public buildings are also found here. The Roxbury Public Library was built in 1937. There is also the town hall, which dates from the mid-1800s. Two churches are also part of this historic area.
