Roxey Ann Caplin was born in Canada in 1793. Around 1835, she married Jean Francois Isidore Caplin.
From 1839, she worked as a corsetmaker in London. A corset is a type of clothing worn to shape the body.
In 1851, her amazing corset designs won a special award at the Great Exhibition. This was a huge event in London that showed off new inventions and products from around the world. She was called a "Manufacturer, Designer and Inventor." You can still see some of her corsets from this exhibition at the Museum of London today.
In 1860, she became a member of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce (RSA). This is a famous group that supports arts, manufacturing, and trade. By 1864, she had created 24 different inventions and officially registered them with patents.
Roxey Ann Caplin passed away on August 2, 1888, in Surrey, England. She left behind a good amount of money, showing how successful she was in her business.
