The Royal Brewster House is a very old and special house in Buxton, Maine. It was built way back in 1805. This house is a great example of the Federal style of architecture. It was once the home of Dr. Royal Brewster, who was the town's doctor for about 40 years. His brother, John Brewster, Jr., also lived here. John was a famous artist who painted portraits, even though he couldn't hear or speak. Because of its history and beautiful design, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

What Does the Royal Brewster House Look Like?

The Brewster House stands on the north side of Brewster Lane. It is a two-story building made of wood. The house has a low, sloped roof and is covered with clapboard siding. Its foundation is made of strong granite.

The front of the house has a main entrance in the middle. This door has tall, narrow windows on each side. Above the door is a curved arch. A porch with square columns protects the entrance. The decorative trim around the roof shows beautiful Federal style carvings.

Behind the main house, there is a two-story section that extends backward. This part connects the house to a carriage house and a barn. Inside the house, you can see simple but elegant woodwork from the Federal period. One room, the parlor, even has French wallpaper that was added in 1859.

Who Lived Here? The Brewster Family Story

The Royal Brewster House was built in 1805. A well-known local builder named Joseph Woodman constructed it. He was also a successful businessman in the area.

The house was built for Dr. Royal Brewster. He had married a woman from Buxton in 1795 and decided to live there. Dr. Brewster worked as the town's doctor for about 40 years. He helped many people in the community.

Dr. Brewster also provided a home for his brother, John. John was born deaf and unable to speak. Despite these challenges, he received an education. He became a traveling artist, painting portraits of people. John traveled widely to practice his art. His paintings are now highly valued and admired by many.
