The Royal Chancellery of Granada (in Spanish, La Real Chancillería de Granada) was a very important court in Spain a long time ago. It was like a high court that handled many important legal cases. Queen Isabel I of Castile created this court in 1505. She moved it to Granada from another city called Ciudad Real. The court had first started in Ciudad Real in 1494. The Royal Chancellery of Granada stopped existing in 1834, when new ideas about government became popular in Spain.

What Was the Royal Chancellery?

The Royal Chancellery was a special kind of court. It was one of the most important courts in the Kingdom of Castile. It heard appeals from lower courts. This meant if someone disagreed with a decision from a local court, they could ask the Chancellery to look at their case again.

How It Started

Queen Isabel I of Castile decided to create this court. She wanted a strong legal system for her kingdom. In 1505, she moved an existing court, the Royal Audience and Chancellery, from Ciudad Real to Granada. Granada was a very important city at that time. This move made the court even more powerful.

Why It Ended

The Royal Chancellery of Granada worked for over 300 years. But in the 1800s, new ideas about how a country should be governed became popular in Spain. These ideas were called "liberalism." People wanted more modern government systems. Because of these changes, the old court system was no longer needed. So, the Royal Chancellery was closed down in 1834.
