Since 2020, the Royal Gwent Hospital does not have a full emergency room for very serious problems. If someone has a serious injury or illness, they should call 999. They can also go to the Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran. However, the Royal Gwent Hospital does have a special unit. This is a 24-hour Minor Injuries Unit. It helps people with smaller injuries that are not life-threatening.

A Look at the Hospital's History
The Royal Gwent Hospital has a long history. It started as a small place called the Newport Dispensary. This was in Llanarth Street in 1839. At first, it only gave out medicines. Later, in 1867, it started to take in patients. It was then called the Newport Dispensary and Infirmary.
Moving to a New Home
The hospital needed more space. So, it moved to a new location. This new land was on Cardiff Road. A kind person named Viscount Tredegar gave the land. The new hospital building opened in August 1901. Viscount Tredegar officially opened it. At that time, it was called the Newport and Monmouthshire Hospital.
Becoming the Royal Gwent Hospital
A few years later, in 1913, the hospital changed its name. It became known as the Royal Gwent Hospital. This is the name it still has today.
Joining the NHS
In 1948, the hospital became part of the National Health Service. The NHS helps make sure everyone can get healthcare. In the early 1960s, the hospital was rebuilt. This made it much more modern. It got new facilities to help more patients.
