Royal King was a very special stallion (a male horse) known for his amazing skills in cutting competitions. He was also a famous father to many Quarter horses, especially when the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) was just starting out.
The Life of Royal King
Royal King was a sorrel (reddish-brown) stallion born in 1943. He was officially registered with the AQHA as number 2392. Felton Smathers from Llano, Texas was the one who bred him. When he was first registered, he was owned by Whiteside and Albin from Sipe Springs, Texas.
His father was a famous horse named King P-234. His mother was a mare (female horse) named Rocket Laning. She was later registered with the AQHA as number 39,024.
Royal King's Show Career
Royal King was a fantastic competitor in horse shows!
- He earned a Performance Register of Merit from the AQHA. This award shows he was a top performer.
- He also received a Superior Cutting Horse award from the AQHA. This means he was excellent at cutting.
- In National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) competitions, he won over $24,000.
- His winnings earned him special NCHA awards: a Certificate of Ability, a Bronze Award, and a Silver Award.
Royal King's Offspring
Royal King was not only a great show horse, but he also became a very important sire (father) of many talented horses. Some of his famous children include:
- Miss Nancy Bailey
- Major King
- Royal Chess
- Royal Jazzy
- Sketer Conway
Many of his daughters had offspring that earned a Race Register of Merit with the AQHA. This means his grandchildren were also fast racehorses!
Some of his children became famous in their own right:
- Miss Nancy Bailey and Royal Chess were inducted into the NCHA Horse Hall of Fame.
- Miss Nancy Bailey was the top AQHA High Point Cutting Horse in both 1952 and 1953.
- Royal Lightning was the top AQHA High Point Western Pleasure Stallion in 1963.
- Royal Chess was the Youth AQHA World Champion Cutting Horse.
Death and Honors
Royal King passed away in 1971. His legacy lives on, and he was honored for his amazing contributions to the horse world. In 1997, he was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame. This is a very special honor for horses who have made a huge impact.
