The Story of Royal Mail Ships
How the RMS Title Began
In the early 1800s, the British Admiralty (which was like the navy's main office) was in charge of carrying mail by sea. The special "RMS" name has been used since 1840.
By 1850, private shipping companies started getting contracts to carry the mail. Having the "RMS" title was a big deal for these companies. It showed that they were reliable and had to deliver the mail on time. This made them look better than other shipping companies.
