Royal National Rose Society Gardens facts for kids
The Royal National Rose Society Gardens, also known as The Gardens of The Rose, was a special place in Chiswell Green, near St Albans, Hertfordshire, in the United Kingdom. It was the main garden and office for the Royal National Rose Society. This society started in 1876.
The gardens themselves opened more than 50 years ago. A royal person, Mary, Princess Royal, helped open them. She was a supporter of the society back then. The main goal of the gardens was to be like a "living dictionary" of roses. This means they wanted to grow and show as many different kinds of roses as possible. The gardens had about 2,500 different types of roses. There were around 15,000 rose bushes in total!
Sadly, the Royal National Rose Society stopped operating on May 15, 2017. Because of this, The Gardens of The Rose are now permanently closed.
What Happened to the Gardens?
After the rose gardens closed, the building at Bone Hill was used by another group. This group was the Royal Entomological Society. They are a society that studies insects.
Butterfly World Project
The Royal Entomological Society made the old mansion at Bone Hill their new main office. They also started a big project called Butterfly World there. This project was launched in March 2008. It aimed to create a place where people could learn about butterflies and other insects. However, Butterfly World also closed down in December 2015.
