Royce Duplessis is an American lawyer and politician. He serves in the Louisiana State Senate for the 5th district. He started this job on December 6, 2022. Before that, he won a special election on November 8, 2022, to fill the open seat.
Early Life and Learning
Royce Duplessis was born and grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. He went to Xavier University of Louisiana. There, he earned a degree in communications. Later, he studied law at Howard University School of Law. He earned a law degree, which is called a Juris Doctor.
His Work as a Leader
Before joining the State Senate, Mr. Duplessis worked in the Louisiana House of Representatives. He represented the 93rd district. He began this role in 2018 after winning a special election.
Before becoming a state representative, Mr. Duplessis worked for the New Orleans City Council. He was also a special lawyer for the Louisiana Supreme Court. He also owns his own law firm. There, he helps people with civil law cases.
Helping People and Laws
Royce Duplessis cares a lot about making the justice system better. In 2021, he wrote a bill called House Bill 678. This bill created the Louisiana Work Opportunity Tax Credit. This credit helps businesses hire people who are rejoining society after being in work release programs. It gives businesses a reason to give these individuals a chance.
He has also worked hard for women's health. He wrote and helped pass House Bill 784. This law is called The Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Act. It helps new mothers in Louisiana. The law makes sure hospitals give women information about postpartum depression. This includes symptoms, treatments, and other helpful resources before they go home.
On June 9, 2022, Mr. Duplessis announced he would run for the State Senate. He wanted to take the place of Senator Karen Carter Peterson. On November 8, 2022, he was elected to the 5th district seat. He officially became a Louisiana State Senator on December 6, 2022.
In 2023, Royce Duplessis was re-elected to his position. He ran without anyone opposing him. This means he will continue to serve the people of District 5.
