Ryan Daniel Montgomery, who is known by his stage name Royce da 5'9", is an American rapper born on July 5, 1977. He is famous for working with another rapper from Detroit, Eminem. They met in 1997 and created the hip hop group Bad Meets Evil a year later.

Their 2011 song "Lighters", which also featured Bruno Mars, was a huge hit. It reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart. This song was on their first extended play (EP), Hell: The Sequel, which came out in 2011. The EP was very successful and went to the top of the Billboard 200 album chart. This was a major moment in Montgomery's career.

Montgomery also has a successful solo career. His first album, Rock City, was released in 2002. He has released eight more albums since then, and many people think they are great. His 2020 album, The Allegory, was even nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.

Early Life

Royce grew up in Detroit, Michigan. When he was ten, he moved to Oak Park, Michigan. He got the nickname "Royce" in high school because he wore a necklace with an "R" that looked like the Rolls-Royce car symbol. His stage name, Royce da 5'9", comes from his height, which is 5 feet 9 inches.

He started rapping when he was 18. Some of the artists who inspired him were Ras Kass, Redman, Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G., and N.W.A.

Music Career

Starting Out and First Album

Royce began his rap career in 1995. In 1997, his manager introduced him to Eminem. They quickly became friends and formed the group Bad Meets Evil. Royce was featured on the song "Bad Meets Evil" from Eminem's first album, The Slim Shady LP.

Royce signed his first record deal in 1998 with Tommy Boy Records. After that label closed, he signed with Columbia Records. He started working on his first album, Rock City. The album was named after Detroit's history with Motown Records. After some delays, the album was finally released in 2002. A song from the album called "Boom," produced by DJ Premier, became popular with underground rap fans.

Working with Other Artists

In 2002, Royce had a disagreement with the rap group D12. They released songs about each other, but they eventually talked things out and ended their rivalry in 2003. They became friends again and even worked on music together in 2008.

In 2004, Royce released his second album, Death Is Certain. It was very popular with critics. The song "Hip Hop" was another successful single produced by DJ Premier. His third album, Independent's Day, came out in 2005.

After taking a break from music, Royce returned in 2007. He worked with DJ Premier and Statik Selektah on a mixtape called The Bar Exam. In 2008, he released another mixtape, The Bar Exam 2. He also released the album Street Hop in 2009, which included the DJ Premier-produced song "Shake This".

Group Projects and Mainstream Success

In 2008, Royce formed the supergroup Slaughterhouse with rappers Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, and Kxng Crooked. Their first album, Slaughterhouse, came out in 2009. In 2011, the group signed with Eminem's label, Shady Records. Their second album, Welcome to: Our House, was released in 2012.

Also in 2011, Royce and Eminem got back together as Bad Meets Evil. They released the album Hell: The Sequel. It was a huge success and went to number one on the charts. The songs "Fast Lane" and "Lighters" were played a lot on the radio. This album helped Royce become a well-known name in mainstream hip-hop.

On August 9, 2011, Royce released his fifth solo album, Success Is Certain.

PRhyme and More Solo Albums

In 2014, Royce and DJ Premier announced they were forming a new duo called PRhyme. They released their first album, also called PRhyme, that same year. They wanted to create music that was different from what was popular at the time. They released a second album, PRhyme 2, in 2018.

Royce's sixth solo album, Layers, was released on April 15, 2016. The song "Tabernacle" from the album was very well-liked by fans and critics.

On May 4, 2018, Royce released the album Book of Ryan. That same year, he was featured on Eminem's song "Not Alike".

The Allegory and Recent Work

On February 21, 2020, Royce released his eighth album, The Allegory. The song "Black Savage" from the album was used in a campaign by Jay-Z. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album in 2021.

In 2022, Royce released a greatest hits album called The Heaven Experience, Vol. 1.

Personal Life

Royce has two sons, James and Trenton, and three daughters. He is married to his high school sweetheart, whom he started dating in 1995. He has a younger brother, Marcus, who is also a rapper known as Kid Vishis.
