Rubén José Suñé (born March 7, 1947, in Buenos Aires, Argentina – died June 20, 2019) was a famous Argentine football player. He played as a midfielder and is best known for his time with Boca Juniors.

Rubén Suñé won eight important titles with Boca Juniors. He also played for the Argentina national team, making his first international appearance in 1969. He played a total of six games for his country.

Many people consider Suñé one of the greatest midfielders and captains in Boca Juniors' history. He is seen as a true legend of the club. During his two periods with Boca Juniors (from 1967 to 1972 and from 1976 to 1980), he played 377 matches and scored 36 goals. Throughout his entire career, he played 527 matches and scored 52 goals.

A Football Star's Journey

Rubén Suñé began his professional football journey in 1967 with Boca Juniors. He was part of the team that won the Nacional championship in 1967.

At first, he played as a right back. Later, in 1972, he moved to play as a central midfielder. This became his main position for the rest of his career. When the legendary player Antonio Rattín retired in 1970, Suñé was chosen to be the new captain of Boca Juniors.

A Memorable Match and a Big Suspension

On March 17, 1971, Suñé was involved in a very famous and controversial Copa Libertadores match. Boca Juniors was playing against the Peruvian team Sporting Cristal. During the game, a big incident happened on the field.

Almost all the players from both teams were sent off, except for two players and the goalkeepers. This event is remembered as one of the biggest scandals in the history of the Copa Libertadores. Because he was a main part of the incident, Suñé was suspended from playing for a year and a half. However, he was later pardoned by CONMEBOL, the football organization.

Moving to Other Clubs

After his time at Boca, Suñé moved to Huracán in 1973. Then, in 1975, he joined Unión de Santa Fe.

At Unión, under the coach Juan Carlos Lorenzo, the team had a fantastic season in the 1975 Nacional championship. Suñé played alongside other great players like goalkeeper Hugo Gatti and forwards Ernesto Mastrángelo and Leopoldo Luque.

Return to Boca and Great Success

When coach Juan Carlos Lorenzo returned to Boca Juniors in 1976, he brought Suñé back to the club. The next few years were some of the most successful in Boca's history.

The team won two Primera División championships, which are Argentina's top league titles. They also won two Copa Libertadores titles, which is the most important club competition in South America. In 1977, they also won the Copa Intercontinental, a trophy played between the best teams from Europe and South America.

The Famous "Ghost Goal" of 1976

June 22, 1976, was a very special day in Suñé's career. He scored the only goal in the final of the 1976 championship against River Plate. This match is known as the Superclásico because it's between two of Argentina's biggest rival teams.

The final was played at the Racing Club Stadium. Suñé scored from a free kick, which is a direct shot at the goal after a foul. His goal not only won the Superclásico for Boca but also secured their 20th league title.

Suñé's professional football career ended in 1981. He played his final season with San Lorenzo. Rubén Suñé passed away on June 20, 2019, at Hospital Británico in Buenos Aires.

The "Ghost" Goal Mystery

For a long time, people believed there was no video recording of Suñé's famous goal against River Plate in 1976. Only a series of photos published by the magazine El Gráfico showed how it happened. Because of this, the goal was often called "the ghost goal."

However, in November 2019, Boca Juniors announced exciting news: a video recording of that famous goal had been found! A short film showing moments before the free kick and the goal itself was shown at the Passion for Boca Juniors Museum in Buenos Aires. Many club members and former players attended the special showing.
