Juan Carlos "Toto" Lorenzo (born October 27, 1922 – died November 14, 2001) was a famous Argentine football player and coach. He is remembered as a legend by fans of Boca Juniors. This is because he led the club to win its first two Copa Libertadores championships.

Life and Career of Juan Carlos Lorenzo

Juan Carlos Lorenzo started playing football as a teenager. He played for Chacarita Juniors. His first professional game was in 1940. In 1945, he moved to Boca Juniors. After two years, he joined the Italian team Sampdoria. He stayed there until 1952.

His next teams included the French club Nancy. He also played for Atlético Madrid, Rayo Vallecano, and Mallorca. In 1958, he was both a player and a coach for Mallorca. After that, he stopped playing but continued his career as a coach.

Early Coaching Successes

As a coach, Lorenzo helped Mallorca get promoted to the top division for the first time in 1960. He was inspired by another famous coach, Helenio Herrera. Lorenzo then coached San Lorenzo in Argentina in 1961. He also coached the Argentina national team in the 1962 FIFA World Cup.

Lorenzo then went back to Europe. He coached Lazio in Italy, helping them reach the top Italian league. He also coached AS Roma in 1964. He coached the Argentine team again for the 1966 FIFA World Cup. After that, he returned to Mallorca and then Lazio. In 1972, he won his first Argentine championship with San Lorenzo.

Leading Atlético Madrid and Boca Juniors

In 1973, Lorenzo became the coach for Atlético Madrid. They won the league title that year. They also reached the final of the UEFA Champions League in 1974. However, they lost to Bayern Munich.

Lorenzo returned to Argentina in 1975. He coached Santa Fe. The next year, he went back to Boca Juniors. There was a lot of pressure because their rivals, River Plate, had won many titles. Lorenzo started one of the most successful times in Boca Juniors' history.

During his four years, Lorenzo and Boca Juniors won two local titles and three international titles. This included the Intercontinental Cup in 1977 (played in 1978).

Key Players in Lorenzo's Boca Juniors Team

Lorenzo's successful Boca Juniors team had many great players. The goalkeeper was Hugo Gatti. He was a big Boca fan and became the player with the most games in Argentine football history. In defense, Vicente Pernía and Alberto Tarantini played on the sides. Francisco Sá and Roberto Mouzo were strong central defenders.

In the middle of the field, new players like Jorge Ribolzi and Mario Zanabria joined experienced Boca players. These included Jorge Chino Benítez and Rubén Suñé. The attack relied on the speed of Ernesto Mastrángelo and Luis Darío Felman.

Later Coaching Years

After his great time with Boca, Lorenzo coached several other clubs. These included Racing Club, Argentinos Juniors, San Lorenzo, Vélez Sársfield, Atlanta, and Lazio. He returned to Boca Juniors in 1987 for a short time. After this, Lorenzo retired from coaching.
