They could even avoid paying taxes to the kings of Spain or Portugal! This made the Couto Misto a very special and independent place for a long time. The End of Independence

The special status of the Couto Misto ended in 1868. At that time, Spain and Portugal signed an agreement that divided the territory between them. Rubiás and the other villages then officially became part of Spain. Even though its independence ended, the history of the Couto Misto is still an important part of Rubiás's story.
