History of Rubislaw Church
Building the Church
Rubislaw Church was built in 1874. It was part of a big plan by the Church of Scotland to build more churches. This happened after a time called the Disruption of 1843. During this time, many people left the main church to form new ones.
The church is made of sandstone. This is unusual for Aberdeen. Most buildings in the city are made of granite. A famous photographer, George Washington Wilson, wanted to pay for the church to be built from granite. But it was too late, as the building plans were already set.
Church Expansion and Status
In 1880, the church became bigger. A tall tower and a spire were added. Some people think the spire was built to compete with another church nearby. That church was the Queen's Cross Church, which belonged to the Free Church of Scotland.
In 1985, Rubislaw Church was given a special heritage status. This means it is an important historical building. Historic Scotland gave it a Grade B listing. In 2019, the Church of Scotland announced plans to sell Rubislaw Church. This was part of a bigger plan to combine some churches.
The Minister's Home
Early Homes for Ministers
The minister of Rubislaw Church used to live in a small house. This house was in the church's graveyard. But in 1922, the Church of Scotland bought a new, bigger house. It had six bedrooms and was in an area called Rubislaw Den.
Selling the Manse
In 2016, the church decided to sell this large house. It was called the manse. They planned to sell it for £1 million. This sale brought in the most money ever for the church from selling a minister's home.
