Rubus vestitus is a type of bramble plant, also known as the European blackberry in the United States. It belongs to the rose family. This plant naturally grows in Europe. It has also spread and now grows wild along the northern Pacific Coast of the United States and Canada, including British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon.
What is the European Blackberry?
The European blackberry is a spiny shrub. It can grow quite tall, sometimes reaching up to 2 meters (about 6.5 feet). Its leaves are special because they look like a hand with fingers. They usually have 3 or 5 leaflets. Each leaflet is wide and almost round, with a pointy tip and small teeth along its edges.
What Do Its Flowers and Fruits Look Like?
The flowers of the European blackberry are a pretty pink or magenta color. After the flowers, the plant grows fruits that are very dark, almost black, when they are ripe. These are the blackberries we often eat!
Where Does the European Blackberry Grow?
This plant is very common in the British Isles. You can find it in most areas there, except for the far North. The European blackberry likes to grow in soils that are neutral or slightly alkaline. This is a bit unusual for bramble species in Europe, as many prefer different soil types.
