About Ruby Yang
Ruby Yang was born in Hong Kong. In 1977, she moved to the United States to study how to make movies at the San Francisco Art Institute. After she finished school, she worked as an editor. She helped put together many movies, including ones about Chinese Americans and big Hollywood films.
She won a very special award called an Oscar! She got it for her short movie, The Blood of Yingzhou District (2006). This movie was about children affected by HIV/AIDS in China. She also won other big awards, like an Emmy and the DuPont-Columbia Journalism Award.
In 2003, Ruby Yang and another filmmaker named Thomas F. Lennon started a project. It was called the Chang Ai Media Project. Their goal was to help people in China learn more about HIV/AIDS. Since then, their movies and short public service videos have been seen by hundreds of millions of people in China.
Ruby and Thomas also made a series of three short movies about modern China. These included The Blood of Yingzhou District, Tongzhi in Love (2008), and The Warriors of Qiugang. The Warriors of Qiugang was even nominated for another Oscar in 2011!
Ruby Yang moved to Beijing in 2004. Later, in 2013, she moved back to Hong Kong. The University of Hong Kong asked her to be a special expert there. Her recent movie, My Voice, My Life (《争氣》), was shown in many theaters in Hong Kong and Macau. The Wall Street Journal newspaper said it was one of Hong Kong’s best films of 2014. It also won an award at the Nashville Film Festival.
In 2015, Ruby Yang helped start a new project. It's called the HK Documentary Initiative. This project helps people in Hong Kong make more documentary movies. They give money to new filmmakers, teach special classes, and help people understand documentaries better. Ruby herself helps guide new filmmakers in Hong Kong. In July 2024, she became the director of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre (JMSC) at the University of Hong Kong.
