Early Life and Education
Rudolf Hundstorfer was born in Vienna, the capital city of Austria. He started working for the City of Vienna in 1966. He was a civil servant, which means he worked for the government.
He continued his education while working. In 1976, he finished his high school equivalent, called Matura. The next year, he became a certified administration official. This helped him in his career.
Getting Started in Public Service
From the early 1970s, Rudolf Hundstorfer was active in the Union of Municipal Employees (GDG). This union represented people who worked for cities. He became the chairman, or leader, of this union in May 2003.
A Career in Politics
Rudolf Hundstorfer became a member of the Vienna City Council in 1990. He was also part of the State Parliament. From 1995, he served as the chairman of the local council. These roles meant he helped make decisions for the city and state.
In October 2003, he became the Vice President of the Austrian Trade Union Federation (ÖGB). This is a very big organization that represents workers' rights in Austria.
Leading the Trade Union Federation
On March 27, 2006, Rudolf Hundstorfer took over as the temporary president of the ÖGB. He stepped in after the previous president resigned. He stayed in this temporary role until a new president was elected.
Later, he was chosen to become a government minister. He then resigned from his roles in the Vienna legislature and city council on January 25, 2007.
Serving as a Government Minister
From December 2008 to January 2016, Rudolf Hundstorfer was the Federal Minister for Labour, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection. This important job meant he was in charge of laws and programs related to work, social welfare, and protecting people who buy goods and services. He worked in the First Faymann government.
In 2016, he was the candidate for the Social Democratic Party in the 2016 Austrian presidential election.
Personal Life and Legacy
Rudolf Hundstorfer was married and had a daughter. He also had two stepchildren. He was involved in several organizations outside of his main work.
He was the honorary president of the Anton Proksch Institute. He was also the honorary president of the Vienna Handball Federation, showing his interest in sports.
He received a special award called the Grand Gold Decoration with Ribbon for Services to the Republic of Austria. This award was given to him by the former president of Austria, Heinz Fischer. It recognized his important contributions to the country.
Rudolf Hundstorfer passed away on August 20, 2019, at the age of 67. He died from a heart attack while in Croatia.
