Rudolf VI: A Key Ruler
Bringing Baden Together
Rudolf VI was the older son of Frederick III and Margareta of Baden. He became the Margrave of Baden-Baden in 1353. A "Margrave" was a type of count who ruled a border area, often with special military powers.
One of Rudolf VI's biggest achievements happened in 1361. At that time, the region of Baden was split into different parts, ruled by different family lines. However, these other family lines eventually ended. This meant that under Rudolf VI, the entire Baden region was brought back together under one ruler. This made Baden much stronger and more united.
A Prince of the Empire
During Rudolf VI's time, the rulers of Baden gained a very important title. For the first time, they were officially recognized as princeps regni. This Latin phrase means "prince of the realm" or "prince of the empire." It showed that the Margraves of Baden were now seen as important leaders within the Holy Roman Empire, not just local nobles. This recognition was a big step up for Baden's power and influence.
Rudolf's Family
Rudolf VI married a woman named Matilde of Sponheim. She was the daughter of Count John III of Sponheim. Together, Rudolf and Matilde had three children:
- Bernard I, Margrave of Baden-Baden (born 1364 – died April 5, 1431, in Baden). He would later become a ruler himself.
- Rudolf VII, Margrave of Baden-Baden (died 1391).
- Matilde (died August 3, 1425, in Schleusingen). She married Count Henry of Henneberg on July 4, 1376.
