Rumali roti is a very thin and soft flatbread from India. It is also known as Manda in some places. People often eat it with yummy tandoori dishes.

The name "rumali roti" is quite interesting. The word rumal means "handkerchief" in many languages spoken in northern India. So, "rumali roti" means "handkerchief bread." This is because the bread is super thin and soft, and it's served folded up, just like a handkerchief!

In the Punjab region, this bread is sometimes called lamboo roti. "Lamboo" means "long" in Punjabi. In the Caribbean, where many people from India live, it's known as dosti roti. "Dosti" means "friendship," which is a nice name for a shared meal!

Rumali roti is usually made from two types of flour. It uses a mix of whole wheat atta flour and white maida flour. It's cooked on a special pan called a karahi. This pan is often turned upside down, so the bread cooks on its rounded, convex side.

There's a special kind of rumali roti from areas like Bannu in Waziristan. This version is much bigger! It's called paasti or paosti chappatai, which means "soft chappati." These large breads are part of a big meal called penda. This meal is usually made for many people gathering together. Paosti is baked on a "batt," which is like a large metal drum cut in half and placed over hot coals or wood fire.

The History of Rumali Roti

The idea for Rumali roti comes from a very old bread. Long ago, during the late Buddhist period, there was a bread called Mandaka. Today, this bread is similar to mande or manda, or even puran poli.

Mandaka was a large, flatbread often filled with a sweet paste made from pulses. It was baked on an upside-down pot. Rumali roti is like a simpler, plain version of this ancient bread. It has been enjoyed for a very long time!
