Rupert Simeon Graves (born on June 30, 1963) is a talented English actor. He has starred in many movies, TV shows, and plays. You might know him from films like A Room with a View and The Madness of King George. He also played DI Lestrade in the popular BBC TV series Sherlock from 2010 to 2017.
Growing Up and School
Rupert Graves was born in a town called Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, England. His mother, Mary, worked as a travel organizer, and his father, Richard, was a music teacher and musician.
Rupert went to Wyvern Community School in his hometown. He finished school when he was 16 years old.
His Acting Journey
After leaving school, Rupert's very first job was as a circus clown! Since then, he has acted in more than 25 movies and over 35 television shows. He has also performed a lot on stage in plays.
He became well-known for his roles in period dramas, which are films set in the past with special costumes. Two of his early famous roles were in movies based on E. M. Forster's books: A Room with a View (1985) and Maurice (1987). He also appeared in films like The Madness of King George (1994).
In 1996, Rupert won an award for Best Actor at the Montreal World Film Festival for his role in the movie Intimate Relations. He was also praised for playing Young Jolyon Forsyte in the TV series The Forsyte Saga in 2002.
Besides his work on screen, Rupert Graves is also a respected stage actor. He has performed in plays on Broadway in New York City, including Closer (2000) and The Elephant Man (2002). In London, he won an award for Best Actor for his role in The Pitchfork Disney in 1991. He was also nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor for his performance in Hurlyburly in 1998.
More recently, he has continued to appear in various TV shows and films. Some of his notable TV roles include DI Lestrade in Sherlock (2010–2017), and roles in Doctor Who (2012) and The White Queen (2013). His recent film work includes Emma (2020) and Dalíland (2022). He is expected to appear in Juliet & Romeo in 2025 and the TV series Washington Black.
Personal Life
Rupert Graves is married to Susie Lewis, who works as a production co-ordinator.
