Rupert Hallowes: A Brave Soldier

Rupert was born in Redhill, Surrey. His parents were F. B. and Mary Ann Taylor Hallowes.

When World War I started, Rupert joined the army. He became a temporary second lieutenant in the 4th Battalion of The Middlesex Regiment. He was 34 years old during the war.

His amazing bravery happened between September 25 and 30, 1915. This was during fighting in Hooge, Belgium. He showed incredible courage during these days.

His Awards and Legacy

Rupert Hallowes was given the Victoria Cross for his actions. This award is very special. It shows he was extremely brave.

His Victoria Cross medal is now kept at the National Army Museum. This museum is in Chelsea, London.

Before the war, Rupert was a scoutmaster. A scoutmaster is a leader in the Scouting movement. He is one of 32 people linked to Scouting who won the Victoria Cross.

There is also a special memorial for Rupert Hallowes. You can find it at the Neath Port Talbot Hospital. It is on the ground floor near the entrance to 'Out Patients'.
