A Look Back at Ruraldale

How Ruraldale Got Its Name

Ruraldale was not always called Ruraldale! When it first started, it was known as Rockville. The name was changed to Ruraldale in 1854. This happened when the area was "platted." To "plat" means to draw a map that divides land into smaller pieces, like lots for houses or streets.

The Old Post Office

A post office opened in Ruraldale in 1852. It was first called "Rural Dale" with two words. Later, in 1895, its name was changed to the single word "Ruraldale," just like the community. The post office helped people send and receive letters and packages. However, it eventually closed its doors in 1902.
