Russell Jeffrey is a former Australian rules football player. He played in the top Australian Football League (AFL). Russell was born on February 6, 1966. He played for two teams: the St Kilda Saints and the Brisbane Bears.

Russell Jeffrey's Football Journey
Russell Jeffrey started his football career as a junior player. He played for the St Mary's Football Club in the Northern Territory.
Early Days in Victoria
Russell first joined the Geelong Cats. He spent most of his time playing in their reserves team. A serious knee injury almost ended his career. He left Victoria after this injury.
A Second Chance with St Kilda
In 1987, the St Kilda Saints gave Russell a chance. He played his first game for them that year. In 1988, he played 14 games for St Kilda.
After the 1988 season, Russell left Victoria again. He played for the Jerilderie Football Club in 1989. He helped them win the Murray Football League premiership. He was even named the best player in the Grand Final in both 1987 and 1989.
Back to the AFL
St Kilda re-signed Russell in 1990. They picked him in the preseason draft. He mostly played as a defender. The 1990 season was his best. He played every game and got many disposals. Russell had played for the Northern Territory in 1988. But in 1990, he played for Victoria in a special State of Origin game.
At the end of the 1991 season, Russell moved teams again. He was traded to the Brisbane Bears. When he played his first game for them, he became the 100th player to ever play for the club.
Success in the Northern Territory
In 1992, Russell returned to his old club, the Wanderers. He became their captain. He led them to win the 1992/93 Northern Territory Football League Grand Final. Russell also won the Chaney Medal for being the best player in that Grand Final.
Coaching Career
Russell continued to coach the Wanderers until 1997. During this time, he also coached other teams. He coached the Northern Territory's Under 18 team. He also coached the league's representative team.
In 1998, Russell joined the Palmerston Magpies. He was a playing coach there. He led Palmerston to four Grand Finals in a row. He coached them to win premierships in the 2000/01 and 2001/02 seasons.
Indigenous Heritage and Family
Russell Jeffrey is an Indigenous Australian. He represented the Indigenous All-Stars team in 1994.
His son, Joel, is also a professional Australian rules football player. Joel plays for the Gold Coast Suns in the AFL.
Beyond Football
After his football career, Russell Jeffrey became involved in politics. He ran as a candidate for the Labor Party. He stood for the seat of Brennan in the 2012 Northern Territory election. However, he was not elected.
