History of the Diocese

The first Russian Orthodox church in Australia was St Nicholas Church. It was started in 1926 in Brisbane. Today, it is known as St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral.

The Australian part of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia was officially created in 1946. Its main church office was first at St Nicholas Church in Brisbane.

In 1950, the main office moved to Sydney. It found its new home at the Ss Peter and Paul Cathedral.

Later, in 1994, the Korean Orthodox mission became part of this Australian and New Zealand diocese. This happened by a special decision from the church leaders.

In 2005, churches in Indonesia that followed older traditions also joined the diocese. A mission was also set up in Pakistan in 2012.
