History of Ruth

Ruth was first settled in the 1880s. It was located along an old railroad line called the Natchez, Columbia & Mobile Railroad. The community got its name from the daughter of a man named Smith Felder. He opened the first post office in Ruth in 1891.

In 1900, only 20 people lived in Ruth.

Ruth School History

The Ruth School opened in 1924. It received money from a special law called the Smith-Hughes Act. This law helped fund vocational education, which teaches skills for jobs. In 1941, the school building was updated by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The WPA was a government program that created jobs during the Great Depression. The Ruth School closed its doors in 1961.

Notable People from Ruth

  • O.C. McDavid was a managing editor for the Jackson Daily News newspaper. He worked there from 1969 to 1977. He was also a talented painter and sculptor.
