Ruth Gallard Ainsworth (born October 16, 1908 – died May 16, 1984) was a British writer. She wrote over seventy books for children. She also created many scripts for radio shows.

About Ruth Ainsworth's Life

Ruth Ainsworth was born in Manchester, England, in 1908. She was the second child in her family. Her father, Rev. Percy Clough Ainsworth, was a Methodist minister. Her older brother, Geoffrey Clough Ainsworth, became a famous scientist who studied fungi.

Early Life and Education

Ruth's father passed away in 1909 when she was very young. After this, her family moved to Felixstowe. Ruth went to Ipswich High School from 1924 to 1926. Later, she studied at the Froebel Training Centre in Leicester. This training helped her learn about teaching young children.

Family Life

In 1935, Ruth married Frank Lathe Gilbert, who was a chemist. They had twin sons in 1936:

  • Christopher Gallard Gilbert became a historian who studied furniture.
  • Oliver Lathe Gilbert became an ecologist, studying how living things interact with their environment. He also studied lichens.

They later had a third son named Richard Frank Gilbert.

Moving Homes

The Gilberts first lived in London. However, their house was damaged during World War II. Because of this, they moved to Porthmadog. Later in their lives, the Gilberts lived in Corbridge, which is in Northumberland.

Ruth Ainsworth passed away in 1984 when she was 75 years old. Her ashes were scattered in a stream in Wasdale, a beautiful valley.

Ruth Ainsworth's Work

Ruth Ainsworth was known for her wonderful stories. She wrote many books for children. She would often re-tell classic fairy tales, making them fresh and exciting. She also created many new stories of her own.

Radio and Television Work

Ruth Ainsworth was a scriptwriter for a very popular BBC children's radio show called Listen with Mother. Many of her stories from this show were later published as books. Some of her stories were even turned into marionette plays for television. These were shows where puppets were controlled by strings.

Books for Me to Read Series

Ruth Ainsworth also worked with Ronald Ridout on a series of books called "Books for me to read." Each book in this series had a secondary title, like "A book for me to read." Some of these books were republished with slightly different names. For example, Pony Pony became Pony, pony : my sixth reading book. Many of these books were published using the initial teaching alphabet, which is a special way of writing to help children learn to read.
