Early Life and Education

Ruth Ann Gaines was born in 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa. She finished high school at St. Joseph Academy in 1965. She then went to Clarke College, where she earned a degree in drama and speech in 1969. The next year, in 1970, she received a master's degree in dramatic art from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Political Career in Iowa

Ruth Ann Gaines has been an important part of the Iowa House of Representatives since 2011. She works on different committees that help make laws for the state. For example, she has served on committees that focus on education, public safety, and helping military veterans. She also held a leadership role as the ranking member of the Government Oversight committee. This means she was a top member of the minority party on that committee.

She has represented different areas of Iowa during her time in office. From 2011 to 2013, she represented District 65. Then, from 2013 to 2023, she served District 32. Since 2023, she has been the State Representative for District 33.
