Early Life and Education
Ruth McClendon was born in Houston, Texas, on October 5, 1943. She went to Phillis Wheatley High School. After high school, she continued her education at Texas Southern University. She later earned a master's degree from Webster University.
A Career in Public Service
Ruth McClendon was dedicated to serving her community. Her political journey began in 1988 when she first tried to win a seat in the Texas House of Representatives. She didn't win that first election, but she didn't give up!
Serving San Antonio
From June 1993 to August 1996, McClendon was a member of the San Antonio City Council. She represented District 2, helping to make decisions for the city of San Antonio.
Texas State Representative
In 1996, a state representative seat became open. Ruth McClendon ran in a special election and won! She officially joined the Texas House of Representatives on November 12, 1996. She was a member of the Democratic Party. She was also an African-American woman, following in the footsteps of another African-American Democrat who held the seat before her.
Once she was elected, Ruth McClendon was very popular with voters. In every election after her first win, she received more than 85% of the votes. This shows how much people trusted and supported her work.
Later Life
Ruth McClendon retired from the state legislature on January 31, 2016. She passed away in San Antonio on December 19, 2017, after battling brain cancer. She is remembered for her long career serving the people of Texas.
