Ruth Edith Tuck OAM (born July 22, 1914 – died October 10, 2008) was an important Australian painter. She was known for her modern art style. Ruth often showed her paintings alongside her husband, Mervyn Ashmore Smith, who was also an artist. She was also a very influential art teacher.
Early Life and Art Journey
Ruth Tuck was born in a place called Cowell, South Australia. She learned to paint from a famous artist named Dorrit Black. Ruth often showed her artwork at the Royal South Australian Society of Arts. She was also one of the first members of the Contemporary Art Society. This group helped new and modern art styles.
Ruth met Mervyn Smith in 1943, and they got married that same year. They both loved art and painted in a modern style. They held many art shows together, especially featuring their watercolor paintings.
Ruth also wrote about other artists. She wrote biographies (life stories) of Mary Packer Harris and her relative, Marie Tuck, for a big book called the Australian Dictionary of Biography.
In 1955, Ruth started her own art school, called the Ruth Tuck Art School. This school is still teaching art today in Burnside, South Australia! In 1981, Ruth received the Order of Australia medal. This award recognized her great contributions to art.
