Burnside was started by Peter Anderson and his family. They moved all the way from Scotland in 1839. Peter Anderson began a large farm near a stream called Second Creek.

His farm had many animals like pigs, chickens, and cows. He also grew crops like barley and wheat. In 1848, another person named William Randall took over the land. He helped plan the town around Second Creek.

The name "Burnside" comes from Scottish words. "Burn" means a small stream or creek. "Side" means next to. So, "Burnside" means "next to the creek," which describes where the first farm was.
