The suburb of Erindale officially began in 1912. Before that, it was a large property owned by a man named James Cowan. He was an important person in South Australian politics.
James Cowan bought the property in 1889 from John Stuart Sanders. He decided to rename the land Erindale. He chose this name because it was the same as his birthplace. So, the suburb carries a piece of history from its original owner.
