Hazelwood Park is a beautiful park in South Australia. It is located in the suburb also called Hazelwood Park, which is part of the Adelaide area.

A stream called First Creek flows through the park. This creek starts in the hills at Waterfall Gully and continues on to Tusmore. The park has many fun things to do. You can find play areas, picnic tables, and barbecues.

Hazelwood Park is quite large for a suburban park. It is special because it does not have any sports fields. Instead, it is known for its huge, old eucalyptus trees. You can see these big trees from far away.

Even though it has great facilities, it is usually not as busy as the smaller Tusmore Park nearby. Hazelwood Park was added to the South Australian Heritage Register on May 11, 1995. This means it is an important historical place.

Hazelwood Park is also home to the George Bolton Swimming Centre. People sometimes call it the Burnside Swimming Centre or just Burnside Pool. This center has several pools for different activities.

There is a large 50-meter pool for swimming laps. There is also a 25-meter pool for children. A shallow wading pool is perfect for very young kids. The center also has a sauna and a steam room. You can find two playgrounds and a small shop for snacks.

The swimming center is only open during the summer months. It gets very popular on hot days in Adelaide, especially when the temperature is over 32°C. On these days, it stays open late into the evening.

History of the Swimming Centre

The Burnside Swimming Centre is a big swimming complex. It first opened its doors in 1966. Building this swimming center was a special project for the Mayor at the time, George Bolton. He had a big dream for what Hazelwood Park could become.

When the idea was first shared in 1964, many people were against it. About 15% of the people living in Burnside were older. They worried that the pool would bring noise and trouble. The estimated cost was also a concern.

Newspapers in Adelaide found the situation very interesting. Cartoonists often drew pictures about the debate. A public vote was held on March 24, 1964, to decide if the pool should be built. The idea did not pass. The Sunday Mail newspaper even had a headline saying, "Burnside Says NO to Swim Pool".

Mayor Bolton did not give up. He kept working on his idea. In December 1964, he announced new plans for the pool. After a strong campaign to explain the benefits and some small changes to the project, another vote was held in February 1965. This time, people voted strongly in favor of the pool.

The Mayor had won his challenge! When the swimming center opened in 1966, it was named the George Bolton Swimming Centre to honor him.
