Ruthe Katherine Pearlman (born June 30, 1913 – died January 30, 2007) was an American artist, teacher, and generous supporter of the arts. She was known for her paintings and for helping many people learn about and create art.

Early Life and Art Beginnings

Ruthe Katherine Gottman was born in 1913 in Connersville, Indiana. Her family, who were Jewish, moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in the 1920s. Ruthe loved art from a very young age. When she was just 16, she started taking art classes at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. This was while she was still a student at Hughes Center High School. Even after she married Dr. Albert Harry Pearlman, she continued to work as an artist.

A Long Career in Art

Ruthe Pearlman completed her art studies at the New York Academy of Art in 1939. She then became an instructor at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. She taught there for a very long time, almost until her death in 2006. This means she was connected to the Art Academy for over 70 years!

Ruthe and her husband traveled a lot across the United States and Europe. She always brought back new ideas for her art and showed her work at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. She also had her own art studio in Cincinnati where she taught many students for years.

Honoring Her Legacy

In February 2008, the Art Academy of Cincinnati honored Ruthe Pearlman. They named the main gallery in their exhibit halls after her. This was a special way to remember her dedication to art and the academy.

Art for Everyone

In 1988, Ruthe was diagnosed with a vision problem called macular degeneration. Even with this challenge, she kept creating art. She also started teaching art to other people who had visual impairments. This passion led her to help create an organization called Art Beyond Boundaries in 2005. This group helps people with disabilities explore their artistic talents.

Ruthe Pearlman was also involved in many community groups in Cincinnati. She received an honorary doctorate degree from the Art Academy in 2002. In 2005, she helped establish the Ruthe G. Pearlman Gallery, named after her maiden name, Gottman. Her artwork is displayed at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and in many private collections. You can find her art in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Baltimore, Maryland.

Family Life

Ruthe Pearlman was married to Dr. Albert Harry Pearlman. They had three children: Jerold, Marsha, and Dr. Michael Pearlman.
