Ruy de Moura Belo (born February 27, 1933, in São João da Ribeira – died August 8, 1978, in Queluz) was a Portuguese poet and essayist. He is known as one of the most famous writers in Portuguese-speaking countries who explored deep questions about life and what it means to be human. Ruy Belo also worked as a translator, changing books from one language to another.

Born in the small town of São João da Ribeira, Ruy Belo started studying law at the University of Coimbra in 1952. He finished his law degree in 1956 at the University of Lisbon. Later, he studied church law at a special university in Rome, called the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas. He earned a high degree there with a paper about how books were reviewed by the church. While in Rome, Ruy Belo was also a member of Opus Dei, a Catholic organization.

In 1961, Ruy Belo left Opus Dei. That same year, he published his first book of poems, called Aquele Grande Rio Eufrates.

After returning to Portugal, Ruy Belo worked for the government in the Ministry of Education. He was an Assistant Director. However, he resigned from his job because of political disagreements, even though he was about to become a Director.

In June 2003, a statue of Ruy Belo was put up in the Parque dos Poetas (Park of Poets) in Oeiras.
