Ryan's Life and Creative Work
Ryan McHenry was born in Dumfries, a town in Scotland. He loved making films and telling stories.
Zombie Musical
In 2011, Ryan wrote and directed a film called Zombie Musical. This movie was about a girl named Anna who starts at a new school in a small Scottish town. Suddenly, a zombie outbreak happens! The cool part is, it's all set to catchy songs. The film was a big hit and critics loved it. It even earned Ryan a nomination at the 2011 British Academy Scotland New Talent Awards.
The Cereal Videos
In 2013, Ryan created a super popular video series called Ryan Gosling Won't Eat His Cereal. He started these short videos on a social media app called Vine. The idea was simple: Ryan would try to feed cereal to the actor Ryan Gosling on screen. Just as the spoon got close, Gosling would turn his head away, as if he didn't want the food.
These videos became a huge internet sensation! Ryan's followers on Vine grew from just 8 to over 200,000. Even big entertainment news sites like Entertainment Online and Huffington Post noticed them. In April 2015, Ryan Gosling himself finally saw the videos. He tweeted, "I actually love cereal," which was a fun moment for Ryan McHenry and his fans.
Facing Illness with Courage
Later in 2013, Ryan found out he had a type of cancer called osteosarcoma. The cancer had spread to his lungs. Even while going through chemotherapy treatments, Ryan kept tweeting and sharing his journey. He often asked his followers for support and ideas. Once, he asked them to use their photo editing skills on a selfie he took in his hospital bed. He was amazed by how creative and supportive his followers were.
Ryan's Legacy
After showing signs of beating cancer, Ryan went back to work in July 2014. Sadly, the cancer returned. Ryan McHenry passed away on May 2, 2015.
Just a few days later, on May 5, Ryan Gosling created his own Vine channel. He posted a special tribute to Ryan McHenry. In the video, Gosling poured a bowl of cereal, saluted the camera with his spoon, and then ate the cereal. It was a touching way to remember the young director.
Ryan's film Zombie Musical was later made into a full-length movie called Anna and the Apocalypse. Ryan helped write the bigger movie with Alan McDonald. It was released in 2017, after Ryan's death, as a tribute to his creative vision.
