São Filipe is a special area, like a county or district, in the country of Cape Verde. It is located on the western side of Fogo Island. This area covers almost half of the island, about 228.84 square kilometers. It is also home to most of Fogo's people, with 22,248 residents counted in 2010. The main city in this area is also called São Filipe. Most people in São Filipe work in farming, and tourism is also becoming very important.

History of São Filipe
The area of São Filipe was created in 1991. Before that, it was part of a larger area called the Municipality of Fogo. This big area was split into two: São Filipe in the southwest and Mosteiros in the northeast. Later, in 2005, another part of São Filipe was separated to form a new area called the Municipality of Santa Catarina do Fogo.

Sports in São Filipe
