History of the McKibben House
Samuel N. McKibben was a man from Pennsylvania. He moved to Iowa before 1856. He was good at business and had this large house built for his family. The house was built between 1866 and 1869.
Mr. McKibben had many jobs in Muscatine. He worked as a lumber merchant, ran a saloon, and sold farm tools. He also sold groceries and other supplies. This house is one of the oldest buildings still standing in Muscatine's original neighborhood. Today, an insurance company uses the building as their office.
Design of the McKibben House
The S. M. McKibben House is built in the Federal style. This style was popular in the United States in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It is a two-story building. It measures about 40 feet (12 meters) long and 25 feet (7.6 meters) wide.
The outside of the house is made of red bricks. These bricks are laid in a pattern called common bond. The front of the house is very balanced. All the windows and doors are placed evenly. The house was updated in 1964. During this time, the original porches, front doors, and windows were changed.
