About S. M. Rasamanickam
His Early Life
S. M. Rasamanickam was born on January 20, 1913. His hometown was Mandur, which is in the eastern part of Ceylon. Ceylon is now known as Sri Lanka.
His Political Journey
After finishing his studies, Rasamanickam started working for the government. He was an Assistant Food Controller, helping to manage food supplies for the country.
Rasamanickam first tried to become a Member of Parliament in 1947. He ran as an independent candidate in the Paddiruppu area. However, he did not win that election; S. U. Ethiramanasingham won instead.
Rasamanickam tried again in the 1952 election. This time, he won and became a Member of Parliament. In 1956, he ran for the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (also known as the Federal Party). But he was defeated by Ethiramanasingham once more.
He won his seat back in the March 1960 election. He was re-elected in July 1960 and again in 1965. However, in the 1970 election, he lost to S. Thambirajah from the United National Party.
Beyond being a Member of Parliament, Rasamanickam was also the president of two important political groups: the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) and the Tamil United Liberation Front.
