Satappa Ramanatha Muthiah Ramaswami Chettiar (born in 1872, died on November 5, 1918) was an important Indian businessman. He came from the area that is now the state of Tamil Nadu. He was also known by the title Diwan Bahadur.
Early Life and Family
Ramaswami Chettiar was born in 1872. His father was S.RM. Muthiah Chettiar from Kanadukathan, Chettinad. His father was famous for helping people and giving money to good causes. For example, he helped fix up the Nataraja temple in Chidambaram. Ramaswami was the second son in his family. His younger brother was Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar, who also became very well known.
Helping Start Indian Bank
In 1906, a very big bank in Madras city, the Arbuthnot Bank, failed. This left many people without their money. Because of this, people started thinking about creating a new bank owned by Indians. The Indian Bank was then started in the same year. Ramaswami Chettiar was one of the people who helped create this new bank. He was also one of its first directors.
In 1907, Ramaswami Chettiar left his role as director. His younger brother, Annamalai Chettiar, took his place.
Helping the Community
Ramaswami Chettiar was known for his generous actions. In 1912, he gave a large amount of money, one lakh rupees, to the Chidambaram Municipal Board. This money was used to build water systems in the town. In 1915, he also started the Ramaswami Chettiar Town High School in Chidambaram. This school helped many young people get an education.
