SNES Multitap facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The SNES Multitap is a special accessory for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It lets more players join in games at the same time. Normally, the SNES only has two ports for controllers. But with a Multitap, you can connect up to five controllers! This means more friends can play together on one console.

What is the SNES Multitap?

The SNES Multitap is a device that plugs into one of the controller ports on your SNES console. It then provides several new ports, usually four, for extra controllers. This increases the total number of players who can play a game together on the same screen. It was very popular for party games.

Why Was the Multitap Needed?

Most video game consoles, like the SNES, were designed for one or two players. However, as games became more social, people wanted to play with more friends. The Multitap solved this problem. It allowed groups of three, four, or even five players to enjoy games together. This made gaming a much more shared experience.

How Does the Multitap Work?

The SNES Multitap is quite simple to use. You just plug it into one of the two controller ports on the front of your SNES console. Then, you plug your extra controllers into the Multitap itself. The console then recognizes all the connected controllers. Not all games supported the Multitap. Games had to be specially made to work with more than two players. When a game supported it, the Multitap would let each player control their own character.

Popular Games Using the Multitap

Many fun games were designed to use the SNES Multitap. These games often focused on sports or party-style gameplay. They were perfect for playing with a group of friends. Some well-known examples include:

  • Secret of Mana: This action role-playing game allowed up to three players to explore a fantasy world together.
  • Bomberman series: Games like Super Bomberman were famous for their multiplayer battles. Up to five players could compete in explosive arenas.
  • NBA Jam: This popular basketball game was a lot of fun with four players.
  • Mortal Kombat series: While primarily a two-player fighting game, some versions allowed for more players in certain modes.

These games showed how much more fun gaming could be when more people could join in.

Other SNES Accessories

The SNES had many other interesting accessories besides the Multitap. These devices helped players enjoy games in new ways. Some examples include:

  • Super Game Boy: This accessory let you play Game Boy games on your TV through the SNES.
  • Super Scope: A light gun accessory used for shooting games.
  • Satellaview: A satellite modem accessory released only in Japan. It allowed players to download games and other content.

These accessories showed how Nintendo tried to make the SNES experience even better for players.
