SR Class 2Wim facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The 2Wim trains were a special type of electric multiple unit (EMU) used by the Southern Railway in the United Kingdom. These trains were designed specifically to run on the West Croydon to Wimbledon Line. They were a small group of trains, and they didn't stay in service long enough to be given a special code number by British Rail later on.

What Were 2Wim Trains?

The name "2Wim" was given to these trains by the Southern Railway. It helped people know they were for the Wimbledon line. An electric multiple unit (EMU) is a train made of several carriages that are all powered by electricity. They can run forwards or backwards without needing to turn around. This makes them great for busy commuter lines.

Designed for a Specific Route

The 2Wim trains were built for the route between West Croydon and Wimbledon. This was a local line, and these trains were perfect for carrying passengers on shorter journeys. They were part of a bigger plan by the Southern Railway to use more electric trains across their network.

Short Service Life

These trains were introduced in 1929. However, they did not stay in service for a very long time. When British Rail took over the railways in the UK, many older trains were replaced. The 2Wim units were retired before they could be given a "TOPS class" number. TOPS stands for "Total Operations Processing System," and it's how British Rail kept track of all its trains.
