The SS Appomattox was a special kind of ship called a banana boat. These ships were designed to carry bananas and other fruits across oceans. The Appomattox weighed 3,338 tons. It was an important ship for the Fyffes Line, a company famous for shipping bananas.
History of the Appomattox
The Appomattox was built in 1893. Its first owner was the Chesapeake & Ohio Steam Ship Company. The ship was named Appomattox because of its connection to Virginia in the United States.
Changing Owners and Names
In 1902, the ship was sold to Elders & Fyffes. This company specialized in transporting bananas. The Appomattox sometimes worked for the United Fruit Company too. This continued until 1910.
In 1910, the ship was sold again. Its new owner was M. Gumuchdjian, a company from Turkey. When the ship changed owners, it also got a new name. It was renamed Seyyar.
Final Voyage and Sinking
The Seyyar continued its work for a few more years. However, its journey ended on March 12, 1916. The ship was sailing off the coast of Karasu. This area is in modern-day Turkey.
During this time, World War I was happening. The Seyyar was sunk by Russian warships. This event marked the end of the ship's career.
