Sa. Kandasamy (born July 23, 1940 – died July 31, 2020) was a talented writer of novels and a filmmaker who made documentary movies. He was born in Mayiladuthurai, a town in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. He won a very important award called the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1998 for his novel, Vicharanai Commission.

About His Life
Sa. Kandasamy was born in Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu, on July 23, 1940. He went to school at Singaram Pillai School. After his studies, he worked at the Chennai Port Trust and also for the Food Corporation of India.
Later, Kandasamy moved to a bigger city called Chennai. There, he joined a group of writers and artists. This group included well-known people like writer S. Ramakrishnan. For a short time, they even published their own magazine about literature, which they called Ka Sa Da Tha Pa Ra.
Sa. Kandasamy passed away at the age of 80 after having a heart attack.
His Writing Journey
Kandasamy's very first novel was called Saayavanam Puthinam. It was published in 1968. This book was liked by many people. It was even chosen by the National Book Trust as one of the best modern books in Indian literature.
Saayavanam and Nature
Saayavanam was one of the first books in India to talk about protecting nature. It focused on how forests were being cut down and how new factories were being built in Tamil Nadu. Kandasamy wrote this novel based on his own experiences growing up in the countryside. He even named the book after a village where he lived as a child.
Vicharanai Commission and Justice
His novel, Vicharanai Commission, was about how people are treated by authorities, especially the police. This book helped him win the Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamil literature in 1998.
Kandasamy wrote seven novels in total. He also published many collections of short stories, all in the Tamil language. One of his novels, Tholaindhu ponavargal, was even made into a television show!
Besides writing stories, Kandasamy also wrote articles where he shared his thoughts on art and writing in Tamil Nadu. He also helped introduce a series of biographies (life stories) published by the Sahitya Akademi.
His Films
Sa. Kandasamy also made documentary films. His film, Kaval Deivangal, was about the history and special ways of making traditional clay art in South India. This film won first prize at the Angino Film Festival in Cyprus in 1989.
He also directed other documentaries. Many of these films were about famous Tamil writers and artists. For example, he made films about the sculptor S. Dhanapal, and writers like Jayakanthan and Ashokamitran.
Awards and Special Honors
Sa. Kandasamy received important awards for his work:
