Merseburg Saale Dom
The Saale River in Merseburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

The Saale is the name of two different rivers in Germany. One is much larger and better known, flowing through the states of Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. It is often called the "Sächsische Saale" (Saxon Saale). The other, smaller river is in Northern Bavaria and is known as the "Fränkische Saale" (Franconian Saale).

The Longer Saale River

The larger Saale River, the Sächsische Saale, starts high up in the Fichtelgebirge mountains. It begins at an elevation of 728 meters (about 2,388 feet). From there, it flows for a long distance, covering about 413 kilometers (257 miles). This makes it an important waterway in central Germany.

As it travels, the Sächsische Saale passes through beautiful landscapes and historic towns. It eventually joins the Elbe River in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Rivers like the Saale are very important for the areas they flow through. They provide water for people, animals, and plants. They can also be used for transportation, fishing, and fun activities like boating.

The Bavarian Saale

The other Saale River, the Fränkische Saale, is located in Northern Bavaria. It is a smaller river compared to its longer namesake. While not as well-known, it is still an important part of the local environment and landscape in its region.
